What Is a Job Referral?

Job referral means when an employee from inside of an organization or have connections in that organization refers you to a position by giving you a positive recommendation. Getting a credible referral from a reliable source is one of the best ways to make a breakthrough in your job search. Referrals can make the difference between getting an interview and having your application filtered out at the first round.  Even though referrals can’t guarantee the position itself, they can increase the chance for your application to be seen by the hiring manager.

After finding a job on job boards, for job seekers, the natural next step is to investigate potential connections by digging deep in your professional network. For job seekers and professionals, building your professional network can’t be easier in this day and age that we live in, after all, everyone is only a click away.

Why Should I Ask For Referrals?

A job referral can be the best way to get the hiring manager to take a first look at your resume when applying for jobs. When you’re referred to a position, and you mention this in your cover letter, you’ve automatically earned a shiny star on your application.

It’s even better when the person referring you know you to a certain depth and can take a couple of minutes to personally mention you to the hiring manager. Believe it or not, referrals are the #1 source of hiring in North America. Research shows that referred hires not only stay longer within the company but also perform better in the long run. If you can get your application tagged as ‘referral’, your chances of getting an interview will skyrocket.

How To Find Someone To Refer Me?

How can you get a referral for a job? What’s the best way to ask someone to refer you for a job at their company? Start by checking for connections at the company on LinkedIn. Search for the company name, visit the company page, and view all you 1st, 2nd or 3rd connections at the company. The world is not as big as it used to be with digital networks, you’ll probably see a list of contacts in your network who may be able to assist.

If you’re a recent college graduate, check with the career centre at your school to see if they can put you in touch with alumni who work at the company that you’re interested in. Even though the best type of referral is an employee referral, clients, vendors, and partners who are connected with the company may also be able to assist.

Employee Referral Programs

Don’t be shy to ask for referrals. It may seem like you are creating trouble for your contact, but in fact, a lot of companies, especially large companies have their own referral programs in order to search for talent more effectively.  The person who refers you may be able to earn some extra cash, if and when you’re hired. Many employers follow an employee referral program procedure to discover like-minded talent that fits into the company, and they provide bonuses for referring candidates to their current employees. If you’re a strong candidate, it’s a win-win-win situation. You get the job, the employer acquires a new talent, and the employee who referred you gets a bonus.

What To Say When I Ask

The hardest part can be what you plan to say and how your inside contact will react. Instead of simply asking “can you refer me to XXX position?”, say something like “Do you feel that you know my work well enough to refer me for a job at your company?” or “Do you know if there is any suitable position for my talent in XXX at your company?” This way, your referrer has a reason to back out if they don’t feel comfortable or confident enough to provide a referral for you. By demonstrating your skills and talent first, you’re encouraging those who say “yes” to be enthusiastic about your performance and deliver a positive message for you.
